I've spent 32 years building and fixing systems. The one that mattered most was the one I was running at home.
I was sitting alone at a hotel bar after a long day entertaining a plant team. I looked up at the mirror behind the bar and barely recognized the man looking back. Overweight. Exhausted. Another night on the road.
Too late to call my wife and kids. Again. So I texted her an apology.
She wrote back one word. I knew she was hurt. And I knew it wasn't the first time.
I never chose my career over my family. I thought working hard was how I took care of them. But I had become intentional about work, and my marriage got whatever was left.
That night I asked the question I couldn't shake: "Is this really all I was built for?"
